Guildford Opera Company – The Merry Widow

1990s Paris. A summer ball in the “Merry Widow’s” garden.
Pontevedro’s Ambassador has problems. His country’s wealth is held by the glamorous ‘Merry Widow’. If she remarries a foreigner, Pontevedro goes bankrupt. Can her numerous French suitors be supplanted by the Ambassador’s First Secretary? But he’s always at his favourite nightclub getting drunk with chorus girls...

This new version of a perennial favourite is set in 1990’s Paris and plays like pure French farce. Amorous and political intrigue are swept along on Lehár’s sparkling music, one familiar tune after another – ‘Vilja’, ‘Women, Women’, the ‘Grisettes’ chorus’ – with the accent firmly on FUN!

The production is fully staged and sung in English with a chamber orchestra accompaniment.

There is a pre-show talk at 6.30 pm before the Friday performance with conductor Lewis Gaston and director Peter Melville.
